Senna grabs LMS podium

Bruno Senna has claimed a podium position in his first ever Le Mans Series race. The Brazilian, nephew of late three-time World Champion Ayrton, was looking to drive for the ex-Honda (now Brawn) Formula One team this year, before the squad elected to retain compatriot Rubens Barrichello to race alongside Jenson Button.

As a disappointed Senna comprimised other opportunities for 2009 due to waiting for a hopefully positive response to his Formula 1 opportunity, the 25-year-old GP2 Series runner-up has since tested for Mercedes in DTM, and was finally confirmed to take part in the Le Mans Series for the Oreca team a fortnight ago.

As the season-opening 1,000 km of Barcelona took place at the weekend, Senna impressed by qualifying on the fourth row in seventh position. "Our best lap was two seconds down the Aston Martin, but our pace was just one second slower during the race," the optimistic Brazilian commented.

Although he has made his feelings clear that Formula One is still his ultimate goal, it didn't stop him claiming third place in his very first endurance race on Sunday. "It was quite interesting and I had a lot of fun," he said afterwards. "Looking at the spirit of the race, I enjoyed it as much as I could. Traffic is tricky, especially when you find two or three slower cars in the same corner - at times like that, everything becomes impossible to predict."

Taking the spoils at the sharp end of the field was the previously mentioned Lola Aston Martin entry, piloted by Stefan Mücke, Jan Charouz and former Prost F1 driver Tomas Enge. The next event will be taking place at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on 10 May, with the series also including the world-famous Le Mans 24 hour race on the weekend of 13-14 June.
